MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. -- The Purdue softball team (10-13) went 2-0 in its first day of The Spring Games, after taking down Lafayette College 8-0 (6 IN) and Toledo 8-1.
The wins included 16 hits vs. Lafayette, while Purdue scored eight runs on eight hits to close the day vs. Toledo. Defensively, Purdue remained perfect with no errors, while forcing two in each of the matchups.
The Boilermakers were led by pitcher/designated player Alex Echazarreta (4-1), who pitched a complete game shutout with a career-high 12 strikeouts and just one it allowed vs. Lafayette. Meanwhile, she followed the performance with a stellar offensive effort vs. Toledo, which saw a three-run homer to right field in the third and a sac fly in the sixth for an additional insurance run.
Meanwhile, pitcher Alexa Pinarski (1-6) secured her first win of the season following 3.1 innings of work, which she allowed just one run, one hit and a trio of walks in the win.
Rachel Becker led the day with five total runs (two vs. Lafayette, three vs. Toledo). Meanwhile, freshman Tyrina Jones made her collegiate debut at R.O.C. Park, scoring a run in both outings. Additionally, the first baseman tied Becker for the most hits vs. Toledo (2).
Purdue will be back with another doubleheader tomorrow at R.O.C. Park. The Boilermakers will take on Western Michigan at 11 a.m. followed by Niagara at 1:30 p.m. ET. Both games will be available on FloSoftball ($) for streaming.
