ATHENS, Ga. – A tough draw for the Purdue softball team (6-4) as it fell to No. 13 Georgia (9-3), 8-0 (5 IN) for the first shutout of the season. After falling to the Bulldogs in five yesterday, Purdue gave up no runs in the first two innings before five Georgia runs on five hits in the third inning proved insurmountable.
Purdue recorded two hits in the outing, notched by freshmen Ryen Ross in the second and Jade Moy in the third, both on singles to left field.
Despite no Purdue hits in the first inning, the Boilermakers came out strong with two runners on-base, but were unable to convert before the final out was served.
Purdue's best scoring opportunity came in the third inning, when the Boilermakers returned to the top of the order and Jade Moy and Rachel Becker made base on the first two at-bats. However the Georgia threw tough balls and the Boilermakers struck out for outs two and three.
The Purdue defense held strong with a single error in the game which came in the fourth inning, marking the ninth time in 10 games Purdue has committed one or fewer errors.
Brenna Smith was credited with the loss, moving to 1-1 on the year after tossing a complete game in yesterday's victory vs. Delaware. Smith was in the circle for 3.1 innings on both ends of the game, striking out one batter and allowing just one walk on her way to a 3.44 ERA.
Purdue will be back next weekend at LSU for the Purple and Gold Challenge, where it will face Stephen F. Austin, Drake and LSU from Friday, February 25 through Sunday, February 27 over a total of six games.
