CONWAY, S.C. – The Purdue softball team (2-0) closed out the first day of the Kickin' Chicken Classic with a 7-3 victory at Coastal Carolina. The Boilermakers held on despite Coastal's bottom of the seventh effort, which saw the bases loaded, two runs, and the game-tying runners left on-base.
In her collegiate debut, starting pitcher Kyndall Klochack earned the win, following 5.2 innings of work, in which no walks were allow and a stretch where 12 of 13 straight batters were sent back to the dugout, hitless, from the second to fifth inning.
Overall, the Boilermakers hit a .286 batting average after eight hits, six walks and no errors. Leading the offensive effort was senior Alex Echazarreta, who recorded an .833 batting average and made base on all three at-bats with one run, two hits and a walk. The Boilermaker also picked up the save after entering the circle for the final inning for relief pitcher Alexa Pinarski.
Sophomore first baseman Kaitlyn Brannstrom tallied a run and four RBI. The eventual game-winner came at the hands of Brannstrom's two RBI double in the fifth inning to give the Boilermakers the 6-1 edge over Coastal. Meanwhile Jade Moy secured a team-best two runs in the win.
To close out their second collegiate game, Olivia McFadden, Kyndall Bailey and Jade Moy combined for three runs and an RBI against the Chanticleers. Bailey went 1-1 in her collegiate debut as a pinch hitter in the top of the fifth.
