CONWAY, S.C. – In opening game of the 2022 season, the Purdue softball team (1-0) tied a program-record-tying four home runs to power the Boilermakers to a 9-3 victory over East Carolina (0-1). Rylee Platusic, Alex Echazarreta and Kiara Dillon all recorded their first home runs of the year.
Leading on both ends of the field was Echazarreta, who went 3-3 from the plate, ending the game with two home runs and three RBI. As the starting pitcher, Echazarreta doled out five strikeouts over four innings of play. The senior faced 16 batters during her time pitching and allowed just three hits. Meanwhile, transfer righty Alexa Pinarski came in relief for two innings when the Boilermakers forfeited three runs before Mo Wimpee closed out the final inning.
THEIR COLLEGIATE DEBUT
A total of four Boilermakers: freshmen Olivia McFaddon, Ryen Ross, transfer Alexa Pinarski and Jade Moy played in their first collegiate game, with McFaddon and Moy accounting for an RBI and a run, respectively.
Third baseman McFaddon secured her first RBI on her first at-bat, which sent Becker home in the first inning. Meanwhile, Moy, a sophomore second baseman who opted out during the 2021 season due to COVID-19, scored a run in her first appearance as well after walking as the lead-off batter.
The Boilermakers will return to St. John Stadium for the Kickin' Chicken Classic this afternoon with a 3 p.m. ET matchup against host Coastal Carolina. The game will be available on ESPN+ to watch.
