WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue men's swimming & diving closes out its dual meet schedule with its first trip to the Twin Cities in four years, competing against Minnesota and Northwestern at the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals.
Action is set for Friday at 5 p.m. ET and Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Minnesota's East Bank campus. Action is set for Friday at 5 p.m. ET and Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Minnesota's East Bank campus. Both days of the meet will be streamed live on the Big Ten Network's B1G+ website and app. The subscription-based service will also have the live streams of the Big Ten Championships next month at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. Fans that sign up this weekend will have their monthly subscriptions cover them through the championship meet (Feb. 23-26).
The University of Minnesota announced this week that it will require attendees at indoor events with 200 or more spectators to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a negative, third-party COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event.
Minnesota and Northwestern are also scheduled to compete against Iowa on the women's half of the triple dual this weekend. The Purdue women have been regulars at the Big Ten Triple Duals for more than 15 years but opted to remain home and host Illinois for their Senior Day meet Saturday.
The Boilermakers already competed against both Minnesota and Northwestern during the fall semester portion of the season. Purdue hosted the Gophers for a season-opening dual in October and the Wildcats were part of the six-team men's field at the Purdue Invitational in November. The Boilermakers and Wildcats are both receiving votes in the latest CSCAA top-25 poll.
The two-day meet features 20 events, including Saturday's platform diving as a non-scoring exhibition. Along with the 1,000 freestyle in place of the mile, the 400 medley relay is the only event not included at the Big Ten Triple Duals that is featured at the Big Ten or NCAA Championships.
Last year's Big Ten dual meet schedule featured a number of triple duals, but all were contested in one day. The Boilermakers hosted the last edition of the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals in January 2020 and Minnesota has not hosted since January 2018, which also marked the last time the Purdue men's full team travel to the Twin Cities. Divers Ben Bramley and Greg Duncan were among the Boilermakers to compete at the 2019 USA Diving Winter Nationals in Minneapolis, but none of Purdue's swimmers have raced at the Gophers' pool for a college meet. Minnesota did host the women's Big Ten Championships last season.
Northwestern replaced Wisconsin at the Big Ten Triple Duals beginning in January 2015, when also Minnesota hosted. The Wildcats would be next up in the rotation to host in January 2023, marking the third time the two-day meet would be held in Evanston since the NU joined the field.
Olympian Brandon Loschiavo has recently returned to West Lafayette, electing to begin training 10-meter synchro with freshman Jordan Rzepka. Loschiavo accompanied the team to the Twin Cities this weekend to mentor the divers. Head diving coach Adam Soldati elected to remain in West Lafayette for the women's Senior Day dual vs. Illinois on Saturday. Assistant coach David Boudia is on paternity leave after he and wife Sonnie were blessed with the arrival of their fourth child, daughter Parker, this week.
The Boilermakers' 1-2-3 finishes in the freestyle sprints coupled with a victory in the 400 free relay highlighted the Oct. 15 dual vs. Minnesota. Nikola Aćin swept the sprints and swam the anchor leg on the victorious relay, teaming with Keelan Hart, Brady Samuels and Idris Muhammad.
Two years ago at the Big Ten Triple Duals in West Lafayette, Brett Riley swept the individual medley races and Greg Duncan swept the springboard diving action. Bramley was also victorious on platform. The Boilermakers also won three relays – the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free. Aćin contributed to all three relay winners. Nikola Bjelajac, Ryan Hrosik, Michael Juengel and Nick Sherman also swam on at least one winning relay.
