TULSA, Okla. – Gabriele Brancatelli continued his hot start to dual singles play Saturday at Tulsa, improving to a team-best 3-0, as the Purdue men's tennis team dropped its road match at Tulsa 6-1.
The Boilermakers pushed the double point to the limit in the early stages. After Athell Bennett and Sebastian Welch were narrowly edged 6-3 against No. 60 Connor Di Marco and Kody Pearson at No. 1, Polish duo Michal Wozniak and Piotr Galus blanked Adham Gaber and Callum Gale at No. 2, 6-0.
The opening point came down to No. 3, where Gabriele Brancatelli and Tomasz Dudek against Tom Thelwall-Jones and Daniel Siddall. Neither side built much of a lead, before Tulsa's tandem eked out a 7-5 win to clinch the opening point.
In singles play, Brancatelli provided the lone point of the match. The rookie outlasted Di Marco at No. 4 to win in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. A pair of Boilermakers took their matches to third sets before falling. Bennett rallied in the second against Pearson at the top of the lineup, dropping the contest 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Galus forced a super tiebreak by topping Gaber in a second set tiebreak at No. 6, but Tulsa's anchor pulled away for a 6-0, 6-7(7), 1-0(3) decision.
