BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman standouts Tyler Downs and Hannah Hill were victorious in events, but wins were otherwise tough to come by for the Purdue swimming & diving teams in a pair of dual meets defeats at the hands of top-25 Indiana on Saturday.
TEAM SCORES
• Men: No. 5 Indiana 170, Purdue 120
• Women: No. 13 Indiana 168, Purdue 120
Downs was victorious in platform diving with a list score of 419.48, posting his seventh event win of the season in a college meet and 10th of the year including his three at the USA Diving Winter Nationals last month. He has multiple victories in all three diving events this season.
Hill continued to emerge as the women's top freshman swimmer. She won the 50 free with a time of 23.30, building on her Big Ten Swimmer of the Week performance from two weekends ago as dual meet action resumed following the semester break. She has also established a freshman benchmark in the 50 free (23.02) this season. Saturday was her fourth individual event victory of the campaign.
Nikola Aćin was out touched by .03 hundredths of a second in the 50 free. The top four finishers in the sprint were all within .08 hundredths of a second of each other. Aćin and Hill were among the four Boilermakers to rank as Purdue's top finishers in multiple individual events Saturday. Coleman Modglin (breaststroke) and Lindsay Turner (butterfly) also accomplished the feat.
Hill added a runner-up finish in the 100 back to her victory in the 50 free. Other second-place finishers in the individual events included Maycey Vieta (platform), Maggie Love (200 IM), Brady Samuels (100 fly), Skyler Younkin (200 fly), Aćin (50 free) and Turner (200 fly). Vieta and Sophie McAfee finished 2-3 on the tower. Turner and Madeline Greaves did likewise in the 200 fly.
The Boilermakers close out their dual meet schedules next weekend. The men travel to the Minneapolis to compete against Minnesota and Northwestern at the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals. The women host Illinois on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET for their Senior Day meet.
