WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For the third time in Purdue women's basketball history, a Boilermaker recorded a triple-double. On Sunday, junior Jeanae Terry tallied 11 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, as the Boilermakers topped Miami 82-76 at Mackey Arena.
Terry joins Stephanie White (1999) and Danielle Campbell (2007) in the elite club.
The Boilermakers improved to 8-4 on the year, exceeding their win total from 2020-21.
Purdue shot 40.6% from the field and went 19-for-24 at the line on the afternoon. Five Boilermakers finished in double figures, led by Cassidy Hardin and Abbey Ellis with 15 points each. Madison Layden added 14 points, Rokia Doumbia chipped in with 10 points.
The Boilermakers tallied 23 assists on 28 made field goals and forced 18 Miami (4-5) turnovers.
Neither side created much separation in the first quarter with Purdue's biggest lead at five points. In the second, a 7-0 Miami (4-5) run whittled the lead down to two points, before the Boilermakers rolled off 11 straight and took a 41-30 lead into the break.
The Boilermakers built their early advantage on just four first-half turnovers to Miami's 11. While Purdue struggled to knock down open looks with a 34.2% shooting clip in the first half, the hosts got it done at the line going a perfect 13-of-13 on free throws in the first half.
Out of halftime, Purdue maintained a double-digit lead, before Miami pulled within two with 3:18 to play in the third off a 10-1 run. Back-to-back jumpers from Moore and Layden, followed by a Hardin triple, took the gap back out to nine.
Miami continued to fight and climbed all the way back to one point down early in the fourth, but Purdue put the game away with a 15-2 run, including a pair of triples from Hardin, one from Ellis and four points from Rickie Woltman.
Purdue grew its lead out to 12 points with 36 seconds left, including Terry's triple-double sealing points, before Miami scored the final six points in the last 17 seconds of the game.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE
Terry joined an illustrious club by overcoming a rough 1-for-6 night from the field. The junior made up for it with a season-high nine free throws. Terry made an early impact racking up four points, five rebounds and four assists in the first quarter, giving her a good shot at achieving the mark after three close calls in recent weeks. The Detroit native was the only player in the game to post a double-digit plus-minus at 11.
Terry is the 13th player in the nation and fourth from the Big Ten this season to record a triple-double. The junior joins Stephanie White's 20 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Indiana on Jan. 22, 1999, and Danielle Campbell's 12 points, 11 rebounds and 11 blocks against Butler on Nov. 17, 2007.
Over her last six games, Terry has averaged 9.8 points and eight and seven assists.
QUOTES
Head coach Katie Gearlds …
She's been really close a couple of times. We challenge her to get on the glass a little bit better. Without Shay when we go small, Jeanae has to help us rebound. She's a willing passer, maybe more than she should be at times. She goes 1-for-6 and gets a triple-double. I wanted to reward her and chase that down the stretch. I'm happy it happened.
Junior Jeanae Terry …
I gave credit to my teammates for knocking down shots, putting me in the right positions and getting those free throws at the end to seal the deal. I'm very excited. I make sure I'm an all-around player – assists, rebounding and scoring. I knew it was bound to happen. I knew if I stayed aggressive in every game that it was going to come.
