SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Purdue men's golf team didn't play its best, but surged late in the round to move back into third place after 36 holes at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate, held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
The Boilermakers totaled a second-round score of even-par 288 for a 36-hole total of 570 (282-288), good for third place entering tomorrow's final round.
The Boilermakers trail Missouri (-10), who shot a 6-under par 282 today, by four shots and Wisconsin (-7) by one shot. Purdue is two shots clear of host Northern Illinois and Nebraska after today's action.
Purdue struggled on the front nine, registering just four birdies and one eagle among its five players, playing the front nine in a cumulative 7-over par and falling all the way to seventh place at one point.
However, Purdue turned it around on the back nine with its five players shooting a combined 3-under par to move back into third place. The Boilermakers had 11 birdies on the back nine.
Leading Purdue in round two were sophomore Herman Sekne and senior Joe Weiler, both with 2-under par 70s. Sekne is tied for third at 5-under par 139 (69-70), while Weiler is tied for seventh at 4-under par 140 (70-70).
Sekne had a consistent day with four birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars, including birdies on two of his last four holes to move into the top-five. Weiler, meanwhile, had an eagle on the par-5 second hole to offset bogeys and Nos. 1, 3 and 4, then had four birdies in a nine-hole span midway through his round for his 2-under 70.
Cole Bradley bounced back from a tough first round to shoot a 1-over par 73, while Nick Dentino (T-35th) shot a 3-over par 75 and Nels Surtani (T-50th) was a 4-over par 76.
Purdue will be paired with Missouri, Wisconsin and Northern Illinois in Monday's final round, a shotgun start beginning at 10:30 a.m. ET.
