SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Purdue men's golf team started strong and put themselves in position after 18 holes at the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate, held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
Purdue totaled a 6-under par 282 to sit in a second-place tie behind leader and host Northern Illinois. The Huskies tallied a 9-under par 279 to outdistance both Purdue and Marquette by three shots. Missouri is fourth at 4-under par 284, while Wisconsin and James Madison are tied for fifth at 2-under par 286.
The Boilermakers were led in round one by sophomore Herman Sekne, sitting in fifth place after an opening-round, 3-under par 69. Sekne was 3-under par through 16 holes when a double-bogey on 17 dropped him back to 1-under par. He would eagle the par-5 18th to move back into the 60s and into the top five.
It marked his second round in the 60s this season and sixth in his career.
Joe Weiler continued his outstanding start to the season with a 2-under par 70, good for 10th after round one. Weiler got to 3-under par through 11 holes, but suffered bogeys on 12 and 15 before finishing his round with a birdie on 18.
Nick Dentino had a strong opening round as well, sitting in 15th place at 1-under par 71. Dentino had three straight birdies on the front nine to get to 2-under par before falling to even par. He birdied 17 to get back under par for his round.
Playing in his first career tournament, Nels Surtani had a good opening round with an opening-round 72, good for 25th place. Surtani was 2-under par through 14 holes before suffering a double-bogey on 15 to fall back to even par.
Cole Bradley shot an opening-round 84, while Andrew Farraye, playing as an individual, shot an opening-round, 3-under par 69 to also sit in fifth place.
Purdue will be paired with Northern Illinois and Marquette in round two, with tee times starting at 10 a.m. ET.
