WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Despite a season-high 15 blocks, the No. 4 Purdue volleyball team (10-2, 2-1 B1G) suffered its first Big Ten loss of the season to Illinois (11-3, 3-0 B1G) in five sets (28-30, 25-15, 24-26, 2518, 10-15).
Five Boilermakers recorded double-digit digs in the match, led by libero Jena Otec with 23. Meanwhile, three registered double-doubles.
Caitlyn Newton, Hayley Bush and Grace Cleveland each recorded double-doubles in the five setter. Newton closed the night with a season-best 19 kills to pair with a season-high-tying 14 digs for the Terre Haute, Indiana native's second double-double in the last three matches. Meanwhile, Bush dished out 47 assists (tying her season-high) and 15 digs, marking the fourth consecutive and fifth double-double of the season.
Moreover, Bush reached 4,000 career assists in the match, becoming just the eighth Boilermaker in program history to accomplish the feat. Currently, the Union, Kentucky native ranks No. 8 all-time with 4,040.
Grace Cleveland put on a clinic late in the match, ending the night with her first double-double of the season. In the fourth set, Cleveland posted five kills alone (5-0-10) to give Purdue the momentum to come from behind and push the match to the fifth. In total, the senior produced 14 kills, seven digs and tied a career-high 10 total blocks (one solo, nine block assists – also tying a career-best).
Sophomore Taylor Trammell led the team in efficiency with a .467 attack % (9-2-15) and came within sight of her first double-double, ending the night with 11 total blocks – one shy of matching her career-best.
