LAS VEGAS – In their first top-25 matchup of the season, the No. 8 Purdue Boilermakers defeated the No. 25 Washington State Cougars in straight sets, 25-19, 25-23, 28-26. The win moves Purdue to 4-0 on the season, including three consecutive sweeps, while Washington State falls to 0-3.
A sound Purdue defense, anchored by libero Jena Otec, clinched the match for the Boilermakers. Otec, who notched 20 digs and went perfect 34-for-34 in receptions, led the way. Meanwhile Purdue's presence at the net saw 11 total blocks, led by five block assists each from Grace Cleveland and Taylor Trammell.
Three Boilermakers produced double-digit kills: Caitlyn Newton (15-4-38), Cleveland (13-1-25) and Emma Ellis (10-4-21). Meanwhile, Trammell went errorless in the middle with five kills on seven attempts for a team-best .714 hitting %.
Purdue will be back in action next weekend at the Xavier University Tournament, where it will take on nationally-ranked Louisville next Friday, Sept. 10 for the team's second consecutive top-25 matchup.
