West Lafayette, Ind. – After 629 days without fans in Holloway Gymnasium, the No. 8 Purdue volleyball team took down LMU, 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20) in front of a sold-out crowd in the season-opener.
The momentum took a final swing in Purdue's direction during the third set, when despite trailing 14-16, the Boilermakers went on a 7-2 run to steal the set and eventual match victory.
The Boilermakers were led by Newton, a fifth-year returner, whose 14 kills gave way to a .414 attack %, her highest since September 20, 2019. The outside hitter recorded 14 kills and just two errors on 29 swings.
As a team, four hitters were above .400 (Newton, Raven Colvin, Taylor Trammell and Grace Cleveland) and five above .300 (addition of Emma Ellis). Additionally, the Boilermaker serve led to seven aces, with Hornung and Jena Otec leading the way with two apiece.
Setter and 2020 AVCA All-America Honorable Mention Hayley Bush produced 41 assists while adding eight digs. Libero Marissa Hornung produced a team-best 15 digs.
In her collegiate debut, middle blocker Raven Colvin went errorless with four kills on eight swings (.500).
Set 1 Stat Highlights:
Maddy Chinn and Newton with three kills apiece. Newton, Cleveland and Bush went errorless in the set. Defensively, Newton led the team with four digs.
Set 2 Stat Highlights:
Trammell went errorless with three kills on four swings for a .750 hitting %. Bush racked up 13 assists, the most in a set tonight.
Set 3 Stat Highlights:
Only one Boilermaker error was committed during the set, propelling the team to a .423 attack %. Purdue's block fell into place, recording two blocks, which Trammell assisted on both. Cleveland led with four kills, meanwhile Emma Ellis and Raven Colvin made their first appearance in the set, producing two kills and one, respectively. It was Colvin's first collegiate kill.

Purdue served up four service aces in the final set. Meanwhile Hornung dug five balls.
