COLLEGE PARK, Md. Ben Nisle doubled twice as part of a three-hit night in which he recorded three inning-opening hits, but Purdue baseball never recovered from a five-run first inning that featured a two-out grand slam in an 11-0 loss at Maryland on Friday.

As the Boilermakers' cleanup hitter, Nisle doubled to leadoff off the second and fourth innings. He also connected for a leadoff single in the sixth. Nisle posted his second two-double game of the season and seventh game as a Boilermaker with at least three hits. Miles Simington (3) and Cam Thompson have also registered two-double games this year.

Justin Vought hit the grand slam off the top of the center field wall, which doubles as the in-play batter's eye, in the bottom of the first. The Terrapins (22-14) sent nine men to the plate in the first inning and posted the eighth inning of five or more runs against Purdue (11-22) this season.

Maryland went on to score in six of the first seven innings, pounding out 16 hits. Six different Terrapins had multiple hits. Single tallies extended UMD's lead in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Ricky Castro struck out the side in the sixth and eighth innings, finishing the night with eight punchouts vs 15 batters faced over 3 1/3 innings of two-run relief. He registered a career high in strikeouts and Purdue finished with 10 Ks to reached double figures for the 13th time this season.

Skyler Hunter singled in each of his first two at-bats, posting his 74th career multi-hit game and pushing his career hit total to 253. He remains the active leader in the Big Ten.

A pair of notable on-base streaks came to an end for the Boilermakers. Simington was kept off base for the first time since March 21 and only second time this season, ending his reached safely streak at 21 consecutive games. Mike Bolton Jr. was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning but his streak of reaching safely at least twice in nine consecutive starts came to end. He has been on base at least once in 12 of his starts though.

In its last six games, Purdue has posted run totals of zero, three, two, 16, one and zero.

Game 2 of the series is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
