MADISON, Wis. – Despite a late push by the Boilermakers which saw five hits in the final two innings, the Purdue softball team (15-26) fell 5-0 to Wisconsin (18-19) at Goodman Softball Complex. The winning run was recorded in the third inning by the Badgers.
Purdue registered 8 hits in the outing. Five came within the final two innings, and despite loading the bases in the sixth, the Wisconsin defense held firm. Kasey Wilhoit produced the team's lone double while Becca Jones and Sydney Bates led the day with two hits apiece.
Lefty Ashley Peters (5-7) struck out four batters in the first four innings, the most for the sophomore since notching four at Minnesota (4/2/21). Meanwhile Savanah Henley and Sydney Preston saw time in the circle, with Preston credited with the final Wisconsin out in the bottom of the sixth.
The bases were loaded for Purdue in the second and sixth inning.
With one out on the board in the top of the second, Becca Jones singled through the middle. Sydney Bates, the next batter up, sent the ball up the right side for Purdue's second hit of the game. Jones put the pressure on the Badger defense by advancing to third on a Wisconsin fielder's choice throwing error, however the Boilermakers were unable to capitalize on the positioning, receiving the third out before
Purdue loaded the bases in the sixth inning. With two outs and a Boilermaker on first, Jones singled to left field, advancing pinch runner Savanah Henley to second. Bates singled up the middle, sending Jones to second and Henley to third, but the Badger outfield caught the final out.
Wisconsin put the first two runs up in the second inning, followed by another two in the fifth and a lone run in the sixth to seal the game.
