COLUMBUS, Ohio – Purdue baseball got on the board first against Ohio State's dynamic left-hander Seth Lonsway, but the Buckeyes answered by scoring in five consecutive innings to take game 2 of the series 12-2 Saturday.
Ohio State (17-13) took its first lead on a two-out RBI double in the fifth inning and blew the game open with a pair of homers – both also coming with two outs – in a four-run bottom of the sixth. Archer Brookman hit his second homer of the day in the bottom of the eighth.
Trent Johnson surrendered two runs (one earned) over 4 2/3 innings of four-hit ball. He walked five, struck out five and induced a pair of inning-ending double plays. The senior moved into 13th place in program history with 178 career strikeouts.
The Buckeyes went on to score 10 times on nine hits, four walks and three hit batters against the Purdue bullpen.
Miles Simington connected for an opposite-field home run to left center in the seventh inning, his second long ball of the season and third as a Boilermaker. It extended his career-long and team-best reached base safely streak to 19 consecutive games. But by the time Simington went deep to begin the seventh, OSU had already homered twice to open up a 6-1 lead.
The Boilermakers (10-20) scored first via Skyler Hunter's second two-out RBI single of the series. His 247th career hit, most among active players in the Big Ten, plated Evan Albrecht in the third inning. Steve Ramirez drew a four-pitch walk to open the frame. Albrecht replaced Ramirez at first on a fielder's choice and then stole second.
Lonsway (3-4) struck out nine over eight innings of four-hit ball. Simington's home run was the only hit Lonsway surrendered after OSU pulled even in the bottom of the fourth. In two career starts against Purdue, the junior has racked up 23 strikeouts over 16 innings of six-hit ball.
The Boilermakers turned inning-ending twin killings of the 5-4-3 and 6-4-3 variety in consecutive innings. Johnson (2-4) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth thanks to the 6-4-3 double play. But an inning-opening error led to the tying run in that frame.
Ben Nisle doubled over the center fielder's head to open the fourth inning, recording his team-leading 15th extra-base hit. But he was thrown out at the plate by Lonsway trying to score on a one-out comebacker. Zac Fascia followed with a base hit to right field but was thrown out on the back side of the play trying to take second base after Jake Parr went first to third.
Sunday's series finale is slated for a 1 p.m. ET first pitch.
