NAPLES, Fla. – The Purdue men's golf team started slow, but finished better on the back nine to sit in seventh place at the Calusa Cup, hosted by the University of Iowa at Calusa Pines Golf Club.

The Boilermakers totaled a first-round tally of 10-over par 298 on the difficult par-72 track to finish the initial 18 holes in seventh place out of nine teams, 12 shots behind leader and No. 15-ranked Florida.

Despite having just nine teams in the field, the event is considered one of the nation's premier collegiate golf competitions. Four of the nation's top seven, and five of the top 15, teams nationally are in the field.

The Boilermakers are in position to make a move in round two. Purdue is just five shots behind second-ranked Oklahoma, who is third at 5-over par 293. Georgia Tech and No. 8-ranked Texas are tied for fourth at 6-over par, while Iowa is sixth at 9-over par. Marquette (+11) and No. 7-ranked Wake Forest (+13) round out the field.

Joe Weiler paced the Boilermakers with an even-par 72, good for sixth place after 18 holes. Weiler was 1-under par until a bogey on the par-5 18th dropped him into sixth place. Just five players, four of which are ranked in the nation's top 70, finished under par in round one.

Freshman Herman Sekne is tied for 13th at 1-over par 73. Sekne was 3-over par after 11 holes, but used an eagle on the par-5 13th and a birdie on 18 to move into the top 15.

Cole Bradley is tied for 17th with a 2-over par 74 in the first round. Bradley birdied the two par-5's on the back nine after going 3-over par on the front nine to move back into the top 20.

Peyton Snoeberger is tied for 44th (+7), while Nick Dentino is 47th (+9).

Round two begins Monday afternoon.
