WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In the regular-season finale, No. 8 Purdue volleyball (14-6) fell to Illinois (7-11), in five sets (25-15, 21-25, 25-18, 25-27, 11-15), snapping its five consecutive match win-streak.
The Boilermakers held match-point in the fourth set (24-22), however Illinois stormed back to take the set in extras, and go on to defeat Purdue in the fifth.
No. 8 Purdue concluded the regular season with its third 14-win Big Ten season since 1987, joining the 2019 (14-6) and 2011 team (16-4) as the only programs to accomplish the feat.
In the team's third fifth-set match of the season, Caitlyn Newton and Hayley Bush recorded their fifth and 12th double-double of the season, respectively. Newton's 14 kills were second-most, while setter Hayley Bush tallied a season-high 55 assists to go along with 17 digs.
Defensive specialist Marissa Hornung recorded a season-high 21 digs, the most since the win at Michigan on 11/27/2019.
Set One | 25-15
No. 8 Purdue opened with a 7-2 lead. Although Illinois brought the match back within two points at 2-10, Purdue responded with an 8-1 run to pull away. Maddy Chinn and Caitlyn Newton led the set with four kills apiece.
Set Two | 21-25
Illinois took the lead 18-17 after a 6-1 run. Despite Purdue tying up the set 18-18, the Fighting Illini recorded the next three points to pull away. After subbing in, Johnson recorded two kills for a would-be momentum swing to 21-22, however upon review, a Purdue rotation error nulled Johnson's second point. Illinois went on to close the set with a 3-1 run.
Set Three | 25-18
Purdue's seet win came in large part to the team's 9-1 run to make the score 17-8. In that run, five of the Boilermaker points came on block assists, with middle blocker Trammell on four of them. Despite a 5-1 run in response by Illinois, Purdue closed out the set with an ace by Hornung.
Set Five | 15-11
Illinois opened the set with a 6-2 run. Newton sparked a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 13-9. On Illinois' match point, Purdue took two straight, however Illinois recorded its match-sealing kill at 15-11.
