WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue softball team (7-16) was unable to overcome an early deficit, with the Boilermakers shut out by Indiana (10-14) with a score of 4-0.
Freshman Savanah Henley pitched a complete game in the outing, notching three strikeouts, including two swinging in the first inning. With the result, Henley moves to a 1-4 record on the season.
Purdue was out-hit 6-2 in the morning showdown, with the dual Boilermaker hits notched by sophomore third baseman Cora Bassett and junior pinch hitter Becca Jones.
With the first Hoosier run coming in the top of the first, Purdue silenced IU's opportunity to score more by leaving two runners stranded, thanks to Henley's forced strikeout and a throw to first from Kiley Goff for the third out.
After a quiet trio of innings, the Boilermakers held scoring positions in the fourth inning, which began on a double to the left field by Bassett. Goff, the next batter up, maintained a keen eye to walk to first, and gave time for Bassett to steal third. With Kaitlyn Brannstrom at-bat, Goff was able to steal second base before Brannstrom connected on a swing. Bassett ran home, however on a fielder's choice, the Hoosier shortstop was able to make the throw in time to the catcher and tag Bassett out. Boilermakers remained on first and third, however were unable to convert before the final out was secured.
Indiana added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning, before adding another in the seventh.
In the Boilermaker's final opportunity to respond, Brannstrom's patience at the plate led to a walk and her pinch runner, Kiersen George, was able to advance on a single by pinch hitter Becca Jones, however the pair of runners were then left stranded as the final two outs were recorded.
