Purdue Dominates Rival Indiana 5-2

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Facing its bitter in-state foe, the Purdue women's tennis team put on a clinic for a 5-2 win over Indiana on Sunday afternoon at the Schwartz Tennis Center. With the win, head coach Laura Glitz joined Matt Iandolo for the program lead with 155 victories in West Lafayette.
 
Purdue has now won seven of the last nine contests facing the Hoosiers, including a current streak of three in a row.
 
It took all three doubles contests to decide the opening point. After dropping doubles match at No. 2, Ena Babic and Csilla Fodor defeated Laura Masic and Jelly Bozovic at No. 1, leaving the match at No. 3 as the doubles clincher. Rut Galindo and Seira Shimizu were narrowly bested in a 7-6(2) slugfest against Caitlin Bernard and Mila Mejic. Indiana took a 1-0 lead into singles.
 
Csilla Fodor started singles play off strong for the Boilermakers, beating Laura Masic at No. 2 in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Nathalia Wolf Gasparin recorded her first singles win of the season, besting Mila Mejic at No. 6 6-4, 6-3.
 
The matches at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 5 all went to a third set. Seira Shimizu overcame a tough loss in doubles play to take the match at No. 4 in three sets against Jelly Bozovic, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The Japanese international recorded her first singles win of the season.
 
Rut Galindo bounced back after dropping the first set at No. 5 to win the next two to clinch the fourth and deciding point for the win, defeating Michelle McKamey 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Ena Babic also came out victorious in three sets at No. 1 against Annabelle Andrinopoulos to make it 5-2 in favor of Purdue.
 
The Boilermakers picked up a half point in the 2020-21 Governor's Cup standings. Indiana leads 5.0–3.5. The return leg of the women's tennis series will take place on April 18 in Bloomington for the regular season finale.
 
Purdue will look to keep it up at home next weekend, hosting Minnesota on Friday and Wisconsin on Sunday. Both matches will start at 12:00 p.m.
