GREENSBORO, N.C. – Scoring finishes by Trent Pellini and Brandon Loschiavo earned the Purdue seniors honorable mention All-American accolades Friday at the NCAA Championships.
Pellini finished 15th overall among a field of 39 swimmers in the 100 breaststroke. It marked the second time in his career he was a qualifier for the consolation final at NCAAs. Pellini earned his fourth career All-America honor, fifth when including last year's honorary distinction in the wake of the cancellation of the NCAA Championships.
As a warmup for his pursuit of a national title on the platform Saturday, Loschiavo demonstrated his versatility by qualifying for the consolation final of 3-meter diving. He finished 16th among a field of 47 while competing in a springboard event at NCAAs for the first time since 2017. It was his fourth career All-America honor at the national championship meet.
Pellini became Purdue's first male swimmer to be a multi-year All-American in an individual event since Lyam Dias (200 breast) in 2014 and 2015. Pellini's top time in the 100 breast Friday was 52.03 in the prelims, which earned him the second swim and scoring finish.
Nikola Aćin's 50 free split of 18.61 on the anchor leg highlighted the Boilermakers' showing in the 200 medley relay. Purdue finished 21st in the event. Aćin's time was good for fourth in the entire race, behind only Cal's Bjorn Seeliger (18.37), Louisville's Haridi Sameh (18.45) and Michigan's Gus Borges (18.49). Louisville, Cal and Michigan finished first, third and sixth, respectively.
Aćin teamed with Michael Juengel, Pellini and Ryan Hrosik on the 200 medley relay team. Saturday at NCAAs, Aćin races individually in the 100 free and is likely to team with Nick Sherman, Ryan Lawrence and Pellini on the 400 free relay. Sherman is also in the mix in the 100 free. In Friday's 200 free prelims, Sherman placed 34th with time of 1:35.25.
Greg Duncan closed out his college career Friday by placing 23rd of 47 in the 3-meter diving prelims. He was an All-American Thursday via a fifth-place finish on 1-meter.
The NCAA Championships conclude Saturday with swimming prelims at 10 a.m., diving prelims at noon and the finals session at 6 p.m. Ben Bramley joins Loschiavo among the favorites to qualify for the 10-meter diving championship final.
