WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue women's tennis team returned home on a sunny Saturday afternoon to host Maryland, topping the Terrapins by a score of 5-2.
Purdue started the match off strong in doubles play. After dropping the match at No. 1, Seira Shimizu and Zeynep Naz Ozturk evened the doubles score with a 6-3 win over Ebony Sampson and Minorka Miranda at No. 3, leaving it down to the match at No. 2 to decide the doubles victor. Nathalia Wolf Gasparin and Rut Galindo sealed the early advantage for the Boilermakers, defeating Zoe Kulkarni and Adela Josefova at No. 2 6-4.
Zala Dovnik earned the first singles point for the Boilermakers after Purdue dropped the match at No. 1. The Slovenia international notched her first career win against a ranked opponent, taking the match at No. 2 against No. 84 Eva Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1.
Seira Shimizu took the match at No. 3 in dominating fashion against Adela Josefova 6-1, 6-4. The win was Shimizu's first season victory at No. 3.
The match clinching point came at No. 4, where Rut Galindo defeated Minorka Miranda in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
After dropping the first set, Zeynep Naz Ozturk came back to win the second set 6-3, forcing the match at No. 6 to a super tiebreaker. The sophomore dominated the final set 10-5, registering her first singles victory on the season.
The Boilermakers will look to maintain their momentum when they host Rutgers tomorrow. First serve is scheduled for noon ET.
