COLUMBUS, Ohio – After falling 20-25 in the first set, No. 10 Purdue volleyball (12-5) battled back at No. 9 Ohio State (15-2) to secure the program's second win of the season over a top-10 program. The Boilermakers took sets two, three and four to close out the afternoon meeting with a 3-1 score (20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22).
In total, the match saw tied scores 27 times en route to the Boilermaker victory, including nine tied scores and six lead changes in the first set alone.
Three Boilermakers recorded double-doubles with Grace Cleveland (17 kills, 11 digs), Caitlyn Newton (13 kills, 11 digs) and Hayley Bush (49 assists, 11 digs) helping the program hand No. 9 Ohio State its second loss of the season and first on its home turf. The win also marked Purdue's first comeback victory of the season when dropping the first set.
Freshman middle blocker Taylor Trammell produced nine stuffs, pacing the team with two per set while chipping in eight kills with two errors on 18 attempts for a team-leading .333 attack %. Meanwhile, libero Jena Otec led the back row with 22 digs, the second-most this season behind her career-high 31 set earlier this year vs. then-No. 6 Minnesota.
With the win, Purdue improves to 4-5 against top-25 opponents this season.
Set 1 | 20-25
Cleveland had a hand in the first three Boilermaker points, including an ace to knot the score 3-3. Purdue and Ohio State continued to trade points until a 10-2 Purdue run, including six consecutive points, gave Purdue a five-point advantage, the largest of the set, however Ohio State responded with a 10-1 run of its own to reclaim the lead and close out the set.
Set 2 | 25-22
Chinn sparked a five-point Purdue run, which included two consecutive Purdue blocks, to tie the match 17-17. Ohio State took the next three points, but with the score 18-20, Purdue went on a 6-1 run to regain the lead. Cleveland posted six kills with just one error on 11 swings during the set for an afternoon's best .455 hitting %. Meanwhile, Jena Otec recorded seven digs.
Set 3 | 25-22
Purdue and Ohio State traded points to open the set. When the Buckeyes took a three-point lead at 11-4 (the largest lead of the set thus far), Purdue went on a 4-1 run, ignited on a kill by Jael Johnson. After Newton added a kill, Chinn went on to have a hand in the next three Boilermaker points with two kills and a block assist with Trammell. An ace by Jena Otec gave Purdue the 20-19 lead, which Purdue held on to for the remainder of the set. Newton recorded a team-leading six kills in the set.
Set 4 | 25-22
Purdue took an early 6-1 lead, however Ohio State chipped away at the score, with a 7-1 run putting the Buckeyes within two of Purdue's lead at 15-13. Then, when the score was knotted 18-18 and 19-19, Purdue took the following point to maintain its lead. The Buckeyes circled, but a block assist by Trammell and Chinn (21-20) and another kill by Trammell (23-20) locked Ohio State out. Jael Johnson recorded a day's best four kills in the set (4-1-7 for a .429 hitting clip).
