SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Purdue wrestling's pair in the 2021 NCAA Championship Round of 12 both fell Friday night at the Enterprise Center, ending the Boilermakers' tournament run with 15.5 team points. Purdue ended Friday in 23rd place in the team standings and their final placing will be determined after tomorrow's finals.
Senior Devin Schroder fell to Wisconsin's Eric Barnett at 125 pounds 5-4, scoring the only takedown of the match, but surrendering two back points in the second period and a reversal in the third. Schroder tried to mount a late comeback bid with a reversal of his own, but Barnett's riding time proved the final difference with the deciding point as time expired.
Sophomore Thomas Penola fell behind early to No. 8 seed Stephen Buchanan of Wyoming and couldn't get out of the hole, suffering a 6-2 loss at 197 pounds. Buchanan got two points at the end of the first and added two more in the third as Penola tried to rally. An escape and a riding-time point accounted for the rest of the scoring.
Purdue totaled 15.5 points for the championships, its highest NCAA scoring output since 2012 (17.5) and the most under head coach Tony Ersland's seven-year tenure.
