NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Three Boilermakers with 13 or more kills led Purdue (10-5) to a 4-1 victory (25-21, 25-16, 24-26, 25-18) at Rutgers (2-13).
As a team, Purdue tied a season-best 17 total blocks, led by freshman Taylor Trammell, who recorded a career-high 12 blocks. With her performance at the net, Trammell became just the fourth player (and second freshman) in the Big Ten this season to record at least 12 blocks in a single match. Additionally, the team hit a .324 attack %, its best mark since downing Indiana in three (.355) on Feb. 28.
Senior Caitlyn Newton recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs on the day for her third of the season. Meanwhile, junior Grace Cleveland was just one block shy of joining her teammate, having ended the evening with a team-leading and season-best 17 kills and nine blocks.
Hayley Bush produced 47 assists in the match to bring her career total to 3,294 assists, tying Rachel Davis (2010-13) as the ninth-most by a Boilermaker in program history.
Jael Johnson chipped in 13 kills with one error on 18 swings. The junior was one shy of tying her career-high in kills and notched the second-highest hitting percentage of the season with her .667 attack mark.

After both teams looked to gain the upper hand throughout the set, Purdue pulled away in the final stretch, taking the last six of seven points. Jael Johnson led the Boilermakers, going perfect with five kills and no errors (1.000 attack %). As a team, Purdue recorded three aces, with a pair from Newton during the same serve sequence, and one by Hornung.
Set Two | Score: 25-16
Cleveland and Newton paced the Boilermakers with five kills apiece, both with no errors in the set. Purdue took a 12-10 lead after a 4-1 run eliminated a one-point deficit. Despite Rutgers tying the score 14-14, Purdue secured the win with seven consecutive points to take the set.
Set Three | Score: 24-26
Two Boilermakers went perfect in the set: Jael Johnson (three kills and no errors on five hits for .600 hitting clip) and Maddie Koch (three kills and no errors on six attempts for .500 attack %). Purdue knotted the match 18-18, but Rutgers claimed the next point and maintained the lead for the remainder of the set.
Set Four | Score: 25-18
Purdue maintained the lead the entire set, with the largest lead coming with Cleveland's kill to make the score, 18-10 in favor of the Boilermakers. Hornung aced the match point to seal the Boilermaker victory.
