LEESBURG, Fla. – Under the lights of Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex, Purdue softball concluded its double header against Nebraska with a 7-0 shutout, credited to pitcher Sydney Bates, to split the day. The Boilermakers bounced back after an 8-1 loss earlier in the afternoon.
With the complete-game shutout, Bates threw 85 pitches on her way to improving her record to 2-1 on the season. Moreover, it was the third complete-game shutout of her career (last: vs. Iowa, 5/6/2018).
Leading the day was Rachel Becker, Kiley Goff and Cora Bassett, who each produced a pair of runs in the second game. Additionally, Bassett tallied two RBI while Becker and Goff each chipped in one of their own.
The winning run was notched by Bassett in the first, thanks to Rylee Platusic. Insurance runs were added in the third, fifth and sixth inning.
Game Two | Score: W, 7-0
Cora Bassett scored the winning run in the first inning thanks to an RBI from Rylee Platusic. In the third inning, three Purdue runs were notched, with Becker, Goff and Bassett finding home.
Then, in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded, Bates struck out the Nebraska batter to end the most dangerous chance of the night for the Huskers' to score.
Another two runs were added in the fifth by Becker after Goff tripled to center field, where the ball went on to touch the wall. On the next at-bat, Bassett registered an RBI on a single to left center, giving Goff time to run home.
The final run of the night came in the sixth inning. After freshman Kaitlyn Brannstrom reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on a throw into the Husker dugout, fellow freshman Kiara Dillon pinch ran for Brannstrom. Dillon went on to steal third moments later, and finished rounding the bases when Becker bunted for an RBI. Purdue went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

The Boilermakers fell 8-1, with the winning run coming in the first inning. While the Boilermakers were able to respond in the bottom of the second with Bates doubling to right center to bring Rylee Platusic home, Purdue was unable to overcome the deficit.
Five Boilermakers saw time in the circle, with starting pitcher Alex Echazarreta recording the loss for her first of the season.
