WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 18th-ranked Purdue wrestling team dropped a pair of matches in a home tri-meet Sunday, falling to top-ranked Iowa 31-18 and suffering a 23-12 defeat at the hands of No. 11 Ohio State. Despite the losses, the Boilermakers got 2-0 performances from senior Devin Schroder and sophomore Kendall Coleman on the day as they moved to 2-5 in Big Ten duals on the season.

Schroder made quick work of Iowa's Aaron Cashman in the opening match of the day, rolling up a series of back points in an 18-0 technical fall victory in the second period. The tech fall was his second of the season and 21st of his career. He followed that win up with a narrow 1-0 win over 10th-ranked Malik Heinselman of Ohio State, using a third-period escape to make the difference after a full five minutes in the neutral position.

Coleman had nine takedowns on the day, including eight of them in his 18-6 major decision over Iowa's Zach Axmear to start his day. He followed up that dominant win with a 3-2 decision over Ohio State's 26th-ranked Elijah Cleary, picking up his score in the second period as he improved to 6-1 this season.

Other wins on Sunday came from freshmen Gerrit Nijenhuis and Emil Soehnlen, senior Max Lyon and sophomore Thomas Penola. Nijenhuis went to work in his match against Iowa's Joe Kelly, turning him twice in the first period and then scoring a reversal and the fall in the second period, Nijenhuis' first career pin and fourth win of the season.

Soehnlen dropped his opener to top-ranked Michael Kemerer of Iowa, but bounced back with a 9-4 decision over Ohio State's Fritz Schierl. He nearly pinned the Buckeye in the first period, catching a cradle and running him over for a four-point move, and then added takedowns in the second and third to finish the win.

Lyon picked up his second top-10 win of the season, using a huge third period to top eighth-ranked Nelson Brands of Iowa 6-1. After escaping in the second period to take a 1-0 lead, Lyon started the third period on top and put Brands on his back, nearly pinning the Hawkeye sophomore, but settling for a four-point nearfall. Lyon almost rode Brands out in the third, giving up the escape in the final seconds and adding a riding time point for the final score.

Penola fell victim to an early mistake in his opening bout, a 9-4 loss to third-ranked Jacob Warner of Iowa. After spotting the Hawkeye a 7-0 lead, Penola tried running him down, scoring a takedown and two stalling points in the third, but ran out of time in his comeback attempt. He recovered with a 3-2 decision over Ohio State's Gavin Hoffman, moving to 6-1 on the season.

In other action, the Hawkeyes topped the Buckeyes 33-14, winning seven of the 10 bouts, including three top-10 showdowns.

With just two dates left on the 2021 Big Ten schedule, Purdue heads to East Lansing, Michigan on Friday for a dual contest with No. 23 Michigan State.
