MINNEAPOLIS – Purdue women's swimming began the Big Ten Championships with a pair of season-best times in the opening-night relays, with freshman Belle Hinshaw adding her name to the program record book in the process.

Hinshaw's leadoff split of 1:47.78 on the 800 freestyle relay moved her into 14th place in program history in the 200 free. She improved on her team season-best mark in the event by 1.69 seconds.

Senior Natalie Myers was part of Purdue's 800 free relay team at Big Tens for the third consecutive year. She was joined by three underclassmen this year, sophomores Kate Beavon and Ellissa Haake as well as Hinshaw. The quartet posted a time of 7:16.22

Even with fewer opportunities to race this season, Hinshaw joined classmates Masy Folcik (100 breast), Hayley Pike (1,000 free) and Evie Sierra (200 fly) as freshmen to join the lists of Purdue's all-time fastest swimmers in at least one event.

Tessa Wrightson, Riley Kishman, Sylvia Kobylak and Jade Knueppel represented Purdue in the 200 medley relay, teaming up for a Purdue season-best time of 1:40.84. All four Boilermakers raced in the event at Big Tens for the first time. However, Wrightson also swam the leadoff leg on the 400 medley relay at Big Tens last year.

Kobylak's versatility and improvement has allowed the sophomore to expand her role on the team. Purdue's top performer in the 200 breaststroke also got the call to swim the first butterfly leg of the championship meet this year.

Action continues Wednesday with prelims at noon and finals at 7:30 p.m. ET. The 100 fly, 400 IM and 200 free are on the schedule for Wednesday. The entire meet is being streamed live on BTN+.
