ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 11 Purdue volleyball (4-4) completed the series sweep of No. 24 Michigan (0-2) Sunday night with a four set victory (26-22, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18).
The match saw 26 tied scores throughout the course of the night, with a battle ensuing from the first set, which saw 14 knotted scores in the extra-point showdown.
As a team, not only did Purdue out-block No. 24 Michigan 15-6, but out-hit its host .349 to .197 in hitting efficiency.
Highlighting the night was Hayley Bush, who joined elite company after notching her 3,000th career assist during the first set. Currently, the redshirt junior totals 3,034 assists and is on-track to enter the Purdue annals during the 2021 season (No. 10 in program history: 3,066 by Paula Harmon, 1991-93).
Additionally, Grace Cleveland produced a season-best 19 kills with just two errors on 30 swings for a .587 attack %, the most efficient the junior has been with at least 19 kills on the day. The Bloomington, Illinois, product also added four block assists in the victory and a stellar performance in the third set with eight kills and no errors (.889 attack %), which was key in the Boilermaker's momentum swing.
The match completed a rigorous opening four weeks of play, which the Boilermakers took on three top-25 ranked opponents over the four-week span.
Set 1 (26-24)
A battle through the entire set, Purdue and Michigan recorded 14 ties in the first set, with 10 coming within the first 20 points. In the set, the largest lead was four points by the Boilermakers (19-15 and 20-16). The Wolverines cut the Purdue lead after a 5-1 run for Michigan to knot the match 21-21. The fight ensued with ties at 22-22, 23-23 and 24-24, but Chinn blasted a kill to kick start the Purdue set win., which was sealed on a block assist by Caitlyn Newton and Taylor Trammell.
The team tallied seven of their 15 total blocks in the first set.
Set 2 (22-25)
No. 11 Purdue and No. 24 Michigan were back and forth through the first 12 combined points with five ties, however Michigan went on a 10-1 run to pull away. The Boilermakers cut the score 21-22 with a seven-point unanswered run, however the Wolverines put it away with a 3-1 run to close out the set.
Set 3 (25-13)
Cleveland put on a show to open the third set, recording five of Purdue's first seven points to take a quick 7-1 lead. The junior recorded eight kills with no errors on nine hits in the set (.889 attack %) to seal the Boilermaker set win. Bush chipped in three kills on three attempts while Chinn and Trammell went errorless in the set as well (1-0-1 and 1-0-2, respectively).
Set 4 (25-18)
Another tight-knit battle ensued between the teams, until a solo block by Bush turned the tide for Purdue (16-13, Purdue). In the set, Bush produced four kills on six attempts (.667%). Newton and Cleveland combined for five of the team's kills on their way to closing out the set, 25-18.
In total, three Boilermakers: Bush (4-0-6), Cleveland (6-0-8) and Trammell (1-0-2) went errorless in the set.
