ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 11 Purdue volleyball team (3-4) upended No. 24 Michigan (0-1) in Cliff Keen Arena Friday night in four sets (25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 25-22).
The Boilermakers put on a clinic at the net, out-blocking the Wolverines 17-4. Purdue's 17 stuffs, which not only tie the 2019 and 2018 season-bests for the program, but the second-most by a Big Ten team this season. The night's blocking was led by freshman Taylor Trammell, who had a hand in nine (two solo, seven block assists) to set a career-high.
Fellow middle blocker Jael Johnson also recorded a career-high eight blocks, besting her previous of seven which was set against another top-25 opponent in No. 16 Marquette (12/7/19). On the attack, the Mooresville, Indiana, native secured her second-best hitting % of the season with a .529 mark with 11 kills and two errors on 17 swings.
Leading the team with 15 kills was Terre Haute, Indiana product Caitlyn Newton. The senior added her second double-double of the year after chipping in 11 digs. Meanwhile outside hitter Maddy Chinn recorded her first double-digit night with a career-best 13 kills.
Set 1 (25-22)
No. 11 Purdue wasted little time at the net, producing six blocks in the first set. Grace Cleveland registered an efficient first set with three kills and no errors on eight attempts (.375 attack %). No. 24 Michigan knotted the score twice in the set, but the Boilermakers maintained the lead.
Set 2 (25-22)
The Wolverines took the first four consecutive points to open the set, but Purdue rallied to bring the score to 7-all. The teams battled back-and-forth until the Boilermakers surged ahead, kicked-off with a kill by Chinn. The Boilermakers led by as much as four points (21-17) before No. 24 Michigan chipped away at the lead until it was 21-20, in favor of Purdue. Purdue closed out the set with a block assist by Taylor Trammell and Grace Cleveland.
Set 3 (24-26)
Despite a tight battle in the set that saw seven tied scores with five lead changes, the Boilermakers came close to earning a sweep after leading Michigan 23-19 as the set neared its close, however a 7-1 run by Michigan allowed the Wolverines to come from behind and win the set.
Set 4 (25-22)
The score was tied five times, while the lead was exchanged on three occasions early in the set. No lead by either team was larger than two points until a kill by Chinn gave Purdue the 9-6 lead. The lead was cut again to 14-14 after a 3-point run by the Wolverines, but a pair of kills by Chinn down the stretch aided Purdue in maintaining the lead. Michigan made one final attempt to take the set, bringing the score to 21-20 in favor of Purdue, but the Boilermakers forced two more attack errors to seal the victory.
