WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In the season home opener at Holloway Gymnasium, the No. 13 Purdue volleyball program swept the Iowa Hawkeyes, 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-17). The victory was the first three-and-out win by either team in its series history since Purdue downed Iowa, 3-0 on October 18, 2013 in Iowa City.
Caitlyn Newton led both teams with 12 kills and a pair of aces. Meanwhile, setter Hayley Bush and libero Jena Otec tallied 11 digs apiece. Bush procured 26 assists on the night, while chipping in four kills (most since four at No. 22 Michigan, 11/27/19).
Purdue's blocking game shined, with a total of 10 blocks, including a team-best eight by freshman Taylor Trammell, which marks the most by a freshman since Blake Mohler (nine at Notre Dame, 9/3/16). The Lexington, Kentucky native also led the team with a .625 hitting clip, with six kills on eight attempts and just one error.
Additionally, Maddy Chinn proved a steady force, with a consistent two kills in each of the first two sets, while closing out the match with three.

Sophomore Maddy Chinn recorded the first kill of the 2021 season in Holloway. Soon after, Purdue went on a 5-0 run, which included an ace by sophomore Maddie Schermerhorn, marking just the second in her career. Iowa chipped away at the Boilermaker lead, knotting the score, 12-12. Despite another knotted score at 18 all due to a 5-1 Iowa run, the Boilermakers responded by forcing six Hawkeye errors and took seven of the last eight points to win the set.
Purdue forced Iowa to 10 errors and held the Hawkeyes to a .000 hitting percentage in the opening set.
Set 2 | 25-15
No. 13 Purdue and Iowa were even-keeled through the opening, until Purdue pulled away with an 8-0 run, kicked off by a pair of block assists by Emma Ellis and Trammell to bring the score to 14-5 and Purdue never looked back. Trammell's work in the middle produced a total of three block assists over the course of the set.
Overall, Purdue's hit a .536 hitting percentage (16-1-28) to propel the team to the set win, halted on just one Iowa block in the set.
Set 3 | 25-17
Iowa kept the set within three points, until a sneak attack by Bush was the first of eight Boilermaker points to lengthen Purdue's lead to 22-13. The redshirt junior tallied three kills in the set, tying with Newton and Chinn as the set leaders. Additionally, Purdue recorded four blocks in the final set, the most by the Boilermakers this season.
