MADISON, Wis. – The No. 13 Purdue Boilermakers were edged in a hard-fought night at No. 1 Wisconsin, falling 25-18, 25-21, 25-19, on Saturday night at the UW Field House.
Purdue held the lead for the majority of the second set, including a match-best five-point lead which culminated at 17-12. After a total of four ties in the set, the Badgers fought back for the victory and closed it out with a 7-1 run.
Seven Boilermakers recorded points in the high-energy night. The team was led by senior Caitlyn Newton, who swung for nine kills while adding four aces, which tied her 2019 match-best. Meanwhile, Maddie Koch and Jael Johnson followed closely with six kills apiece. Meanwhile, Marissa Hornung produced 10 digs for her first double-digit effort of the season.
THE BREAKDOWN
Set 1 (18-25)
Despite a 4-1 Badger lead to start the set, Purdue forced Wisconsin to work for every point. The Boilermakers gained momentum as Koch blasted two straight kills as part of a 3-1 Purdue run to cut the score to 9-12. Then, Johnson put in motion another 4-2 run. Despite match point for the Badgers at 24-16, Purdue fought back with two consecutive points on stuffs by Koch and Newton. Koch led the Boilermakers with four kills in the set.
Set 2 (21-25)
After sacrificing the first point, No. 13 Purdue led for the majority of the set. The Boilermakers went on a 4-0 run following the first point on their way to a 7-3 advantage over the No. 1-ranked Badgers. Koch opened the series with back-to-back kills, while Jena Otec notched her first ace of the season on the run. The largest Purdue lead of the match came in the second set, with a five-point advantage over the Badgers (17-12). Newton recorded two aces during the stretch.
Set 3 (19-25)
The teams traded points early and Purdue took a 3-2 lead, but the Badgers regained control with six unanswered points. The Boilermakers fought back with a 4-1 run of their own to cut the deficit to 9-7, which included an ace from Johnson and two kills from freshman Taylor Trammell. Maddy Chinn paced the Boilermakers in the third set, blasting four kills.
