Final Brackets
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Purdue wrestling team wrapped up its best Big Ten Championship finish since 1992 on Sunday, finishing fifth with 83 points at the conference tournament, hosted at the Rutgers Athletics Center. Junior Devin Schroder and freshman Kendall Coleman posted silver-medal finishes at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively, to lead a group of eight placewinners and NCAA qualifiers.
"Our guys put together a great weekend," said head coach Tony Ersland, who adds to his growing list of coaching accomplishments in his sixth season with the Boilermakers. "We came up shy of where we wanted to be in a few spots, but I'm really pleased with the effort overall performance of our team. Now it's time to get ready for NCAA's."
Schroder ran into a buzzsaw in the finals at 125 pounds, falling to top-seeded and top-ranked Spencer Lee of Iowa by major decision 16-2. The Purdue junior is the highest placewinner for the Boilermakers at 125 pounds since Chris Fleeger won the conference title as a sophomore in 2003, the only two Purdue wrestlers to reach the finals at the weight.
Coleman closed the gap against top-seeded Ryan Deakin of Northwestern, but couldn't overcome the nation's No. 1 wrestler at 157 pounds, falling 7-2. Deakin scored in the first and second periods, riding Coleman out both times and building a 5-0 lead going to the third. Coleman took a neutral start and picked up a takedown midway through the period, but couldn't overcome the early deficit. His second-place effort is the second-best performance by a Purdue freshman at the conference championships, joining Arnold Plaza as 1-of-2 Boilermaker rookies to reach the finals all-time.
Senior Dylan Lydy opened Sunday with an incredible overtime win over Nebraska's Michael Labriola, going all the way to the 11th minute before sealing the win with an escape and a takedown in the second set of tiebreakers. The familiar opponents traded escapes in regulation and the first set of tiebreakers, and went all the way to the final pair of 30-second frames to decide the match with Lydy holding a slight edge in riding time. Both wrestlers escaped, with Lydy holding a slight edge and he countered a Labriola shot for two more to decide the bout on points. It was Lydy's third win over Labriola this season, who came into the tournament ranked fifth in the nation in most polls.
Lydy went on to the third-place match, where he took it into deep water again with a 3-1 sudden victory over No. 6 seed Kaleb Romero of Ohio State. After escapes for each wrestler in regulation, Lydy displayed his counterwrestling skills once again, re-attacking after Romero shot for the win. His bronze-medal showing is the best of his career at the Big Ten Championships.
Junior Griffin Parriott came up just short in his first match of the day, falling victim to a late stalling call and an OT takedown in a 3-1 sudden-victory loss to third-seeded Brayton Lee of Minnesota. Parriott was leading 1-0 in the final 30 seconds when he and Lee went out of bounds on the edge and he was tagged for his second stalling warning, granting Lee a point and tying the score. Lee went on to secure the winning takedown midway through the extra frame, pushing Parriott into the fifth-place bout.
Parriott fell in overtime again in the fifth-place match giving up a takedown before the buzzer in regulation and another in sudden victory against No. 4 seed Kanen Storr of Michigan. Parriott had the early lead with a first-period takedown and second-period escape, but Storr rallied late for the win.
Fellow Purdue junior Max Lyon also dropped an overtime result in the consolation semifinals, falling 4-2 in the second sudden-victory period to No. 3 seed Abe Assad of Iowa. Lyon continually attacked the Hawkeye's legs throughout the match, but was unable to finish and had several stalemates called. After escapes in regulation and the first set of tiebreakers, Lyon was still on the attack, drawing a stall warning on Assad, but the Iowa rookie reattacked and scored to finish the match.
Lyon moved to the fifth-place bout for a rematch with No. 6 seed Rocky Jordan of Ohio State, falling 6-1 to take sixth place. Lyon was able to get to Jordan's legs on a few occasions, but was unable to score a takedown. The No. 10 and No. 11-seeds in the tournament at 149 and 184 pounds, respectively, Parriott and Lyon wrestled well above their projected seeds and were a huge part of the Boilermakers' team showing.
Freshman Thomas Penola locked up Purdue's eighth and final NCAA Qualifying spot, posting a 3-2 win over Illinois' Luke Luffman and securing seventh place at heavyweight. Penola hit a nice countershot in the second period, using a slick ankle pick to score two and then escaped to start the third for the final point difference.
Sophomore Parker Filius came up short in his seventh-place match, falling 3-1 to Dylan Duncan of Illinois. A second-period reversal was the difference as Filius managed to escape in the third period, but couldn't finish a takedown, despite getting to Duncan's legs several times. His top-eight finish at 141 pounds earned an automatic spot in the national field.
Seeds and brackets for the national tournament will be released Wednesday by the NCAA, unveiling the Boilermakers' first-round opponents at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
