FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Boilermaker softball team produced its 15th win of the season with its 5-3 victory over Idaho State on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Purdue split the day, 1-1 after dropping an eight-inning, 8-6 result against Kennesaw State earlier in the day.
Five Boilermakers scored over the course of three innings, including a trio in the first. Answering Idaho State's two runs to open the game, Rylee Scott was the first run for Purdue. On the next at-bat, Madison Douglass homered to center field, scoring Skye Webb, who recorded the RBI on Scott's run, on the hit.
Purdue's game-winning run came in the fourth inning. Ryleigh Scott doubled, scoring Becca Jones before the inning ended. An insurance run was added in the fifth when pinch hitter Cora Bassett blasted a single through the left side, allowing Rachel Becker to score the fifth and final run of the day.
Sydney Bates secured the victory to move to 9-3 on the year. The junior pitched a complete game for a 2.10 ERA, nine hits and one walk while striking out three in the game.
Meanwhile, the first game was forced to extra innings following a game-tying two runs in the seventh inning by Kennesaw State. The Boilermakers, who held a 4-2 advantage heading into the top of the seventh inning, was unable to answer the additional four runs produced by the Owls in the eighth.
The extra-inning effort was led by Rylee Platusic, who scored a two-run home run, which was the first over-the-fence hit for the Boilermaker in her collegiate career. The sophomore ended the game with two hits on two at-bats.
All six Purdue runs were notched by a different Boilermaker while Platusic and Webb tied with a team-leading two RBI apiece.
In the circle for the first 7.2 innings was freshman Ashley Peters, who struck out three batters. The loss was assigned to Alex Echazarreta (2-2), who entered in relief in the seventh inning with two outs on the board. The eight-inning game marked the third of the season for the Boilermakers and the third in the past four weekends.
Purdue will close out the Colorado State Classic tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. ET when the Boilermakers will resume its game against Colorado State, which was halted Friday evening due to darkness. The Boilermakers led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Upon the conclusion of the game, the two teams will continue with its originally scheduled game.
