JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A five-run first inning launched the Boilermakers (14-6) to a 9-0 shutout in five innings over Akron on Sunday morning.
A triple by leadoff batter Ryleigh Scott in the top of the first was just the beginning for the hot start for Purdue. Purdue exhausted eight batters in the lineup before the half inning ended. In the first four batters up, a triple (Scott), double (Rachel Becker), single (Skye Webb) and a three-run home run (Becca Jones) were recorded to secure the early Boilermaker lead.
Becca Jones' home run marked her first career homer. The shot cleared the left field fence sending Chase and Wilhoit to home.
Purdue added a run in the third inning, curtesy of Kendall Chase, who recorded the single to right field for the RBI which scored Webb. The RBI marks the second consecutive game and 11th time this season the sophomore earned an RBI.
In the fourth inning, three Boilermakers scored. Mo Wimpee kicked off the runs, followed by Scott's second run of the day (unearned) off a RBI single by Madison Douglass and Becker, who found home after a mental error by the Akron catcher.
Overall, Purdue registered 9 hits, no errors and 9 RBI. With the team's nine runs, Purdue has produced at least as many in every tournament of the season.
In the circle, Ashley Peters (2-1) earned the victory after pitching four innings of work and securing four strikeouts in 15 at-bats. Antoinette Hill recorded her first appearance in the circle as a Boilermaker, securing win after facing the final three batters in the sixth.
Seven Boilermakers accounted for the nine hits, led by Scott and Becker, who registered two apiece. Meanwhile, Webb recorded a game-leading two hits on three at-bats and Jones led with three RBI on the day.
The Boilermakers concluded the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge with a two-game winning streak. Up next, Purdue will compete in the Colorado State Classic from Friday, March 6 through 8.
