BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Purdue's Ben Bramley medaled in platform diving for the second year in a row, impressing with a pair of 400-point lists as the Big Ten Championships wrapped up Saturday.
Bramley improved on his prelim score by 34.95 points in the final (447.90) while winning silver in the event, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors. It took a big rally and career-best showing by Ohio State's Lyle Yost to best Bramley. The freshman improved on his prelim list score by 106.95 points, averaging 84.7 points per dive over the final three rounds to win with a score of 451.
The Boilermakers finished seventh in the team scoring with 561 points. Only 40 points separated sixth-place Iowa (571) and ninth-place Penn State (531). Senior Nick McDowell was recognized as Purdue's Big Ten sportsmanship honoree. The senior scored in the mile Saturday.
Nick Sherman capped his big week with a team-best split of 100 split of 43.05 on the anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay, helping the quartet finish in fourth place. Purdue had three relays place among the top five this week. Sherman teamed with Nikola Aćin, Ryan Hrosik and Keelan Hart, accounting for the third-fastest time (2:53.83) in program history. Aćin's leadoff leg split of 43.44 stands as the Boilermakers' season best in the 100 free.
Sherman also moved into fifth place in program history in the 200 breaststroke with a career-best time of 1:55.77. The sophomore scored in all three of individual events this week at Big Tens.
Elliot Cooper (200 fly), Brett Riley (200 back), Hart (100 free) and Hrosik (100 free) also posted career bests that improved their standing on Purdue's all-time lists.
Michael Juengel (200 back) and Aćin (100 free) were both B finalists Saturday.
Bramley won the platform prelim with a list score of 412.95 as the only diver among a field of 26 to reach the 400-point benchmark. He was the bronze medalist in the event as a freshman last season.
Greg Duncan and Bramley teamed up to give the Boilermakers a medal of each color this week at Big Tens. The Purdue men and women combined to win seven diving medals this year, earning one in all six events.
Selected swimmers will compete at the Boiler-Make-it NCAA last chance meet on Sunday, March 8. Swimming qualifiers for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Wednesday, March 11. The divers qualify for NCAAs at the Zone Championships, with Zone C set for March 12 to 14 in Lexington, Kentucky.
