WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue women's tennis team needed all seven points to decide its Sunday clash with in-state foe Notre Dame. The Boilermakers fell to the Fighting Irish 4-3 with the final match going down to a super tiebreak.
The Boilermakers came out firing in doubles play. Alex Sabe and Ena Babic finished off Zoe Taylor and Zoe Spence at No. 2 6-3. Seira Shimizu and Csilla Fodor followed suit and took down Julia Lilien and Ally Bojczuk 6-2 at No. 3, clinching the doubles point. Purdue never trailed in any of the three doubles contests.
Nathalia Gasparin and Zala Dovnik were leading Cameron Corse and Page Freeman 5-4 when play was ceased.
Purdue tried to carry the momentum into singles play. After dropping a point at No. 2, Zala Dovnik answered back for Purdue with a straight-sets victory over Bess Waldram 6-2, 6-4 to give the Boilermakers a 2-1 advantage.
The Fighting Irish came back with two more points of their own to put them one away from victory. Babic responded with a come-from-behind win to down Spence 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1.
At No. 6, Csilla Fodor fought valiantly for three sets in an attempt to seal the victory for Purdue, but Maeve Koscielski rallied to clinch the win for Notre Dame 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(4).
