UPDATE: Sunday's Purdue-North Carolina game has been moved up to a 10:30 a.m. ET first pitch.
MINNEAPOLIS – For the second day in a row, a four-run inning burned Purdue baseball after it was a one-run game entering the frame, but ultimately it was a tough day offensively that haunted the Boilermakers in a 6-0 loss vs. No. 8 NC State on Saturday at the CambriaCollegeClassic.
Cory Brooks gave Purdue (6-3) another quality outing, striking out a career-high seven over five-plus innings of two-run ball. He kept it a 1-0 game until the sixth inning. The third-year sophomore has worked a combined 15 innings of three-run ball over the first three weekends, registering 15 strikeouts vs. 13 hits allowed and struck out the side around a 1-out single in the fourth inning.
Brooks (2-1) did not issue a walk Saturday while containing an elite Wolfpack lineup that has now scored six-plus runs in nine straight games. He registered four of his seven Ks vs the No. 3 and 4 hitters in the NCSU lineup.
But left-hander Nick Swiney dominated for NC State (10-0). He struck out a career-high 15 over eight innings of one-hit ball. Swiney (3-0) retired the final 22 batters he faced. Using his curveball as an out pitch, he registered nine of his 15 Ks via a called strike three.
Skyler Hunter opened the game for the Boilermakers with a base hit to center field. Zac Fascia was later hit by a pitch with two outs. It proved to be Purdue's only scoring opportunity. The Boilermakers did not have another base runner until Hunter drew a one-out walk in the ninth inning. A game-ending double play followed.
The 15 Ks were Purdue's most at the plate since also fanning 15 times in an April 2014 win at Illinois State. The Boilermakers scored eight runs on 13 hits that night in Bloomington-Normal.
Purdue has had a tough draw this weekend at Minnesota's indoor tournament. Both Duke and NC State threw their ace pitchers against the Boilermakers. For the season, Swiney has racked up 37 strikeouts over 21 innings of two-run ball. Purdue has been limited to just one run on seven hits over the first two games of the weekend after scoring 54 runs in first seven games of the season, posting at least one four-run inning in every contest.
For the second day in a row, the Boilermakers were involved in a close play at the plate in which the call went against them. Saturday, Purdue thought it had Patrick Bailey tagged out at the plate on a squeeze bunt in the sixth inning. Bailey was called safe, scoring the second run of the game.
Matt Moore got out of a bases loaded jam in top of the sixth, preventing a big inning. But the following frame, J.T. Jarrett connected for a two-out, three-run homer. That gave the Wolfpack a four-run rally, extending the lead to the eventual 6-0 final score. It was NC State's 16th home run in 10 games this season.
Hunter and Fascia have both reached base safely in each of the first nine games this season. Hunter is also riding a six-game hit streak. Fascia threw out runners at the second base in the third and ninth innings. He has been credited with five official caught stealings this year.
Andrew Bohm regrouped and retired six consecutive batters after giving up the home run to Jarrett.
Purdue takes on No. 23 North Carolina on Sunday its final game of the CambriaCollegeClassic. First pitch has been moved up to 10::30 a.m. ET. Jett Jackson is slated to start on the mound for the Boilermakers.
