BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Greg Duncan rallied to repeat as the bronze medalist on the 1-meter springboard and Purdue men's swimming & diving posted four times that rank among the program's all-time top 10 Thursday at the Big Ten Championships.
Duncan (360.20) ripped his last dive of the championship final for a list-high score of 68.20 to overcome a five-point deficit for third place entering round 6. It was his fourth 60-point dive of the list, which allowed him to overcome a slow start via a score of 42 in round 1. He has won bronze in each of his career events at Big Tens. The junior also accounted for the fifth medal won by a Purdue diver at Big Tens this year after the women won four last week in Iowa City.
Ryan Lawrence won the B final of the 50 free with a career-best time of 19.69. He was victorious from lane 1 while moving into sixth place in program history. The Boilermakers racked up 66 points in the event after five swimmers qualified for scoring finals. Nikola Aćin was an A finalist while Ryan Hrosik and Nikola Bjelajac joined Lawrence in the B final.
Michael Juengel, Trent Pellini, Nathan Barsanti and Nick Sherman teamed up for the third-fastest time in program history in the 400 medley relay. Pellini's 100 split of 51.62 was faster than his program record (51.76) from the 2019 Big Ten Championships. Juengel's leadoff leg split (47.00) does officially go into the record book as the third-fastest time in program history in the 100 backstroke. He was just .03 hundredths of a second off the program's freshman record.
Individually, Sherman took 10th in the prelims of the 200 IM with a career-best time of 1:44.91, moving into fifth place in program history. He and Pellini both scored in the B final of the event. Brett Riley (1:46.60) scored in the C final and moved into 12th place in the team record book. The Boilermakers scored 30 points in the event.
Aćin nearly matched his career-best time in the 50 free prelims, advancing to the A final thanks to a time of 19.52. Hrosik (19.51), Aćin and Lawrence have all broke 19.7 in the event this season.
The Big Ten Championships continue Friday with prelims at 11 a.m. ET and finals at 6:30 p.m.
