BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Purdue men's swimming & diving won a medal and broke a record in the opening night relays Wednesday at the Big Ten Championships.
The Boilermakers won bronze in the 200 medley relay, claiming their first relay medal since winning silver in the 200 freestyle at Big Tens in 2009.
Purdue also eclipsed a relay record on the opening night of Big Tens for the fourth year in a row. This season it was the 800 free relay benchmark that went down. Nick Sherman's anchor leg split of 1:33.95 was a big reason why. It was the second-fastest anchor split in the race even though the Boilermakers finished 9th. It was also faster a second than Purdue's program record in the 200 free (1:34.94).
The 200 medley team of Michael Juengel, Trent Pellini, Ryan Hrosik and Nikola Aćin posted the second-fastest mark (1:24.44) in the program record book. Pellini and Aćin helped Purdue's honorable mention All-America relay team post a time of 1:24.33 in the event at NCAA Championships last season. While teaming with since-graduated seniors Erik Juliusson and Joe Young, that same quartet originally broke the team record with a time of 1:24.53 at Big Tens a year ago.
As an NCAA provisional qualifying time (B Cut), Purdue's time in the 200 medley relay was only .14 hundredths shy of an A Cut. If it ranks among the top 25 nationally, it would be enough for another bid to NCAAs assuming at least one Boilermaker can qualify individually.
Aćin and Pellini doubled up in the relays Wednesday, teaming with Nikola Bjelajac and Sherman on the 800 free. Pellini's leadoff leg split of 1:36.06 moved him into fourth place in program history in the 200 free. They eclipsed the program record from 2017 by 1.89 seconds.
The Big Ten Championships continue Thursday with prelims at 11 a.m. ET and finals at 6:30 p.m.
