GREENSBORO, N.C. – Head coach Boo de Oliveira led the Purdue softball team to a pair of victories over Fairfield in the final day of the UNCG Invitational. With the day's results, the Boilermakers move to 12-3 on the season.
Heavy hitting early on led Purdue to a 9-5 victory over Fairfield in game one and a 9-1 win in game two. In addition to the Boilermakers notching a season-high 13 hits in the first game, six of the seven Boilermakers scored through just the first two innings. Juniors Ryleigh Scott and Skye Webb made base on every at-bat (2-2), with each scoring a pair runs.
As a team, Purdue secured eight RBI, stole three bases and received four walks in the first win of the day. Sydney Bates (7-1) received the win after pitching a complete game and allowing no runs through the first four innings.
In the second game, Alex Echazarreta moved to 2-0 following a complete game. The pitcher allowed just one run and eight hits while striking out four batters to accumulate a 0.87 ERA.
In total, Purdue recorded 18 runs on the day, including a team-leading four from Webb.
Madison Douglass secured a two RBI double in the top of the seventh, leading to the final exclamation point on the Boilermaker victory in game two. Douglass contributed two RBI in game one and added a run, while producing one run, one hit and two RBI in her second outing.
Next week, Purdue will return to the sunshine state for the JU-UNF Tournament which will be held on the campuses of Jacksonville and North Florida. Games are slated from Friday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 1.
