BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Purdue baseball scored all six of its runs over the first three innings and Bo Hofstra closed out his third win of the young season by retiring all eight batters he faced, highlighting a 6-4 win at Campbell on Friday.
Trent Johnson (1-0) worked six innings of two-hit ball in a vintage series-opening performance. The only run he surrendered scored on a two-out homer in the second inning. The junior did not pitch from the stretch until there were two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Boilermakers posted a four-run inning for the fifth consecutive game. They've started the season 4-1 for the second time in the last three years. Purdue chased CU starter Cam Cowan with its four-run rally in the top of the third. Cowan struck out 15 over 8 1/3 innings of three-hit ball in his season-opening start at nationally ranked South Alabama last weekend. Purdue tagged him for six runs on five hits Friday. Cowan (0-2) issued five free passes (2 walks, 3 HBP) to the 19 batters he faced.
Purdue coaches Greg Goff and Chris Marx were victorious in their return to Buies Creek. They spent a combined 12 seasons at Campbell as a head coach (Goff, 2008-14) and assistant (Marx, 2015-19). Marx helped the Camels win the last two Big South Conference regular-season and tournament titles.
Hofstra went 8-up, 8-down against the 1 through 8 portion of the Campbell (2-3) lineup. He finished both the eighth and ninth innings with a strikeout. The junior has retired 17 of the 18 batters he delivered a pitch to (excluding an automatic intentional walk). Hofstra has yet to surrender a hit.
Saturday's game vs. Maine has been moved back to a 2 p.m. ET first pitch. The Black Bears will take on Villanova at 10 a.m. in the first of three games Saturday at the Campbell Invitational.
FRIDAY NOTABLES
• Zac Fascia connected for a two-out, two-strike home run in the first inning. It was his first homer of the season and fifth as a Boilermaker. Fascia has hit safely in each of the first five games this season and reached base safely three times Friday. His leadoff hit by pitch ignited the four-run rally in the third inning.
• The bottom of the lineup once again played a key role for the offense. From the 8-hole, Evan Albrecht delivered an RBI single in the second inning and drew a bases-loaded walk the following frame. He has an RBI in every game in which he has played, with his team-leading seven RBI already surpassing his total from 2019.
• Also from the bottom of the order, Bryce Bonner and Tyler Powers both bunted for a hit in the second inning and registered an RBI the following frame. Bonner has reached base safely in eight of his 13 plate appearances this season.
• Purdue pitchers dominated the 1 through 5 portion of the Campbell lineup, limiting that quintet to a combined 1-for-19 day.
• The seventh inning was the Camels' only frame in which a batter reached base with less than two outs. Campbell scored three in the frame to get back in the game. But Bo Hofstra won a full-count battle vs. leadoff man Waldy Arias, with the RBI ground out producing the second out of the inning. The Camels were unable to put the tying run on base at any point after the Boilermakers' four-run inning.
• Trent Johnson faced only 22 batters, needing only 89 pitches to get through six innings. He and Hofstra each registered a pair of 1-2-3 innings.
• Skyler Hunter's RBI single in the third inning chased Cowan. Purdue's center fielder finished the night 2-for-4 with a walk, pushing his career hits total to 210.
• Ben Nisle has scored a run in each of the first five games. He was 2-for-5 with a double Friday.
