Boilers Tripped Up by Wisconsin 27-14

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team picked up four wins Sunday vs. Wisconsin, but fell 27-14 to the ninth-ranked Badgers at Holloway Gymnasium. Senior Dylan Lydy, junior Devin Schroder, and freshman Kendall Coleman all emerged victorious, winning their second match of the weekend, while Purdue moved to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in conference duals.

Schroder put together an outstanding come-from-behind win in the opener at 125 pounds as the No. 6 Boilermaker dug out of an 8-1, first-period hole to earn a 9-8 decision over Wisconsin freshman Eric Barnett. Barnett countered a pair of Schroder's shots in the first, scoring a takedown the first time and catching a cradle the second time to turn him for four back points. Schroder took the top position in the second and capitalized with a four-point nearfall and a penalty point as Barnett was called for stalling, cutting the score to 8-6 and building up a surplus of riding time. Barnett started things on the feet in the third and Schroder kept the offense coming, finishing a single-leg attack and riding him out for victory No. 22 on the season.

Coleman put on a show at 157 pounds, rolling out 12 takedowns and a reversal in a 26-11 technical fall over Drew Scharenbrock. The sixth-ranked Boilermaker rookie was relentless, stringing together four takedowns in each of the three periods in addition to a reversal to start the third after Scharnenbrock took the top position. The flurry pushes Coleman's season takedown total to 89, leaving him 11 shy of becoming the 16th wrestler in program history to score 100 in a season and the first since 2010. His 26th win of the season also marks the eighth-most by a freshman in program history.

Lydy continued his workmanlike assault on the season, grinding out a 3-1 decision over Jared Krattinger at 174 pounds. The fourth-ranked Boilermaker attempted a variety of shots in the first and second, and got close to the takedown a few times, but finished one out in the third to improve to 26-1 overall and 6-1 in conference duals.

The fourth and final Purdue win of the evening came at 197 pounds, where sophomore Jared Florell gutted out a 3-1 sudden victory over Wisconsin freshman Taylor Watkins. Filling in for the injured Christian Brunner, Florell worked the upper body throughout the match, catching underhooks and continually putting pressure on the Badger rookie. His persistence paid off in the eighth minute, avoiding a throw-by on the edge and staying in bounds for the two-point takedown and win, his second career dual victory.

The Badgers picked up bonus points at a pair of weights, but won in narrow margins at 141, 149 and 184 pounds. The final match of the day wasn't able to finish as Purdue's Thomas Penola and Wisconsin's fifth-ranked Trent Hilger had head-to-head contact at heavyweight and Hilger was unable to finish the match. Because Penola was called for a technical violation, the match results as a disqualification for Penola and gave six more team points to the Badgers.

Purdue's final home dual of the season is scheduled for Friday, February 7 at 7 p.m. ET in Mackey Arena as the Boilermakers welcome Nebraska to West Lafayette. Purdue will honor both its seniors and alumni on the evening, recognizing Lydy, Brunner and Nate Limmex before the dual and hosting a short program for the alumns at the intermission.
