SANFORD, Fla. – Purdue baseball raced out to an early lead and proved resilient in responding to an eight-run inning for the opposition, rallying to defeat Hofstra 10-9 in a series-clinching win Sunday.
The Boilermakers (3-1) were victorious in 3 of 4 in the season-opening series, winning a four-game set for the first time since sweeping Santa Clara on the 2017 spring break trip. This year's team joined the 2003, 2012 and 2018 Boilermakers as those this century to win at least three games during a season-opening weekend.
Zac Fascia was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and three runs scored Sunday. He scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when Bryce Bonner's pinch-hit single took a wild bounce over the head of the Hofstra (1-3) shortstop. Purdue scored four times in the bottom of the sixth after going down 9-6 during the Pride's long rally in the top of the frame.
Bo Hofstra closed out a victory for the second time in the series, working two innings of hitless relief while earning his 10th career save. He inherited the tying run at second base with no outs in the top of the eighth, pitching over the leadoff double.
All three of the Boilermakers' wins in the series were in comeback fashion. Purdue scored five times in eighth inning Friday, nine times over the seventh and eighth innings Saturday night, and responded with the four-run rally Sunday.
Kyle Wade (1-0) recorded four big outs to help the Boilermakers swing the momentum. He got the final out of the sixth inning and then posted a quick zero the following frame after Purdue had regained the lead.
Errors played key roles in both sixth-inning rallies. Combined, 24 men batted in the frame, with the teams accounting for 12 of the 19 runs scored in the game.
Evan Albrecht and Tyler Powers ignited the game-winning rally from the bottom of the lineup. Albrecht drew a leadoff walk and Powers followed with a base hit. They scored on Kyle LaPlante's sac fly and Ben Nisle's double. A two-out error allowed Nisle to score the game-tying run.
James Kulak was effective in his second career weekend start, working three innings of one-run ball. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first and followed that up with a 1-2-3 second, one of the few times all series a Boilermaker retired Hofstra in order.
Purdue returns to action Friday when its visits Buies Creek, North Carolina, for the Campbell Invitational. The Boilermakers take on the host Camels on Friday at 5 p.m. They'll also play Maine and Villanova next weekend.
SUNDAY NOTABLES
• Purdue scored four-plus runs in an inning four times vs. Hofstra, accomplishing the feat once in each game. The last time the Boilermakers pulled that off in one weekend was April 2017 vs. Indiana.
• Purdue gave up five-plus runs in an inning and still won for the first time since beating Northwestern 8-7 in May 2018 at Alexander Field.
• The Boilermakers trailed in all three games they won this weekend, a feat they had not accomplished in one weekend since March 2012 at Murray State.
