COLUMBUS, Ohio – Led by a pair of top-five finishes by Erin Verbrugge, Purdue women's swimming combined for nine berths in A finals across seven events at the three-day Ohio State Winter Invitational.
Katie Hughes (4th,, 16:58.00) and Maddi Johnson (6th, 16:59.92) finished among the top six in the finals-only 1,650 freestyle, accounting for two more A finals-equivalent showings. They both eclipsed 17 minutes in the event for the first time this season.
Verbrugge placed fifth in both the 200 backstroke (2:00.57) and 200 individual medley (2:06.42). She was also an A finalist in the 100 back (57.22), finishing eighth. Her 200 back time ranked as the fifth fastest for Purdue this season.
Johnson joined her classmate with three top-10 showings, ranking as Purdue's top finisher in the 200 (10th, 1:52.20) and 500 free (6th, 4:56.33) to go along with her sixth place in the mile.
Ella Pheifer was an A finalist in the 50 (23.99, 10th) and 100 free (51.54, 6th) as the Boilermakers' top finisher in both races.
Every Boilermaker that competed posted at least one personal season-best time.
Next up for Purdue is the Big Ten Championships, which open Wednesday evening in Iowa City and continue through Saturday.
