SANFORD, Fla.
– Kyle LaPlante's two-out, three-run double in the eighth inning broke open a tie score and punctuated his three-hit team debut while propelling Purdue baseball to a 9-6 victory vs. Hofstra in the season opener.

The Boilermakers (1-0) overcame deficits of 3-1 and 6-4. They scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning, taking advantage of four walks in the frame en route to winning their first game under head coach Greg Goff.

Purdue improved to 6-4 in series openers dating back to 2011, including 4-0 when the first game has been played in Florida.

Skyler Hunter matched LaPlante's three-RBI night, delivering a go-ahead, two-run double in the fourth inning and drawing the game-tying, bases-loaded walk in front of LaPlante's double in the eighth.

FRIDAY NOTABLES
The Boilermakers scored seven of their nine runs with two outs.
Bo Hofstra worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning against the 4-5-6 portion of the Pride's lineup to earn his ninth career save. He struck out the first two batters of the frame and Tyler Powers made a nice sliding catch in foul territory up the first base line to end the game.
Dalton Parker (1-0) and Bo Hofstra teamed up to close out the win without surrendering a hit over their final 3 1/3 innings.
Purdue's four pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts, matching the 2017 team for the second most in a season opener this century.
Mason Gavre delivered an RBI single in his first at-bat as a Boilermaker, accounting for Purdue's first hit and RBI of the season. He also found a way to make a productive out with an 0-2 count and two men aboard in the eighth inning after failing to execute a sacrifice bunt.
Along with Powers, Milo Beam and Mike Bolton Jr. also had an impact off the bench late in the game. Beam drew a walk as a pinch hitter with two outs in the eighth inning, loading the bases for Hunter. In his team debut, Bolton scored the go-ahead run as a pinch runner on LaPlante's double.
Zac Fascia threw out a pair of base stealers at second base in the first inning. He cut down a Big Ten-leading 18 base stealers last season. Offensively, the senior had a pair of singles and two runs scored.
Evan Albrecht and Hunter both scored from first base on the two-out, multi-run doubles hit by Hunter and LaPlante.
Purdue won the game despite not retiring Hofstra leadoff man Austin Gauthier, who finished the night 2-for-2 with a double, home run and three walks. He went deep to right field to begin the game.
Andrew Bohm escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third inning after having the honor of being the first Boilermaker out of the bullpen. He went on to strikeout four of the first six batters he faced.
Purdue starter Trent Johnson struck out Hofstra's 5-6-7 hitters in order in the second inning.

The Boilermakers' five-five run inning was made possible thanks in part to three full-count plays. Zac Fascia delivered an opposite-field single on a full-count offering, following up Ben Nisle's leadoff walk with Purdue's first hit since the fourth inning. Milo Beam and Hunter both drew their two-out walks on full-count pitches.

Evan Albrecht delivered a two-out RBI single to tie the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Zac Fascia was nearly thrown out at the plate, but the catcher couldn't glove the throw from center field cleanly. After Hunter's double gave the Boilermakers the lead, the Pride did successfully cut down a runner at the plate. Right fielder Vinnie Costello threw out Hunter at the plate on LaPlante's single through the right side.

The series continues Saturday with a 1 p.m. ET doubleheader.
