WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Greg Duncan's fourth springboard diving sweep of the season and Nick McDowell's fourth career event victory at the annual two-day meet highlighted Friday at the Big Ten Triple Duals for the Purdue swimming & diving teams.
Duncan and McDowell teamed with Emily Bretscher, Brett Riley and the men's 200 medley relay to help the Boilermakers win six of the events contested Friday vs. Minnesota and Northwestern. Eighteen more events are on the schedule Saturday at day 2 of the meet.
Just .15 hundredths of a point kept Bretscher from also sweeping the women's springboard diving events. Minnesota's Joy Zhu bested her 324.75 to 324.60 on 3-meter. Bretscher (301.60) came back to win on 1-meter by 6.75 points.
McDowell won the 1,000 freestyle (9:11.77), marking the third year in a row the senior has won an event at the Big Ten Triple Duals. Riley added a heat 1 win in the 100 backstroke to his event victory in the 200 individual medley (1:50.39).
Duncan is now 10-for-12 in event victories at NCAA meets this season. The junior posted winning scores of 344.80 on 1-meter and 406.55 on 3-meter, emerging victorious by at least 28 points in both events. He swept the springboard events at four dual meets this season, accomplishing the feat vs. Notre Dame, Tennessee and Michigan State as well as Friday.
Updated 2019-20 individual event victory totals for Boilermakers to win Friday…
• Greg Duncan – 10
• Nick McDowell – 8
• Emily Bretscher – 8
• Brett Riley – 5
Maizie Seidl was part of one of the best finishes off the night. She was out touched by .03 hundredths of a second by Minnesota's Jordan McGinty in the 200 freestyle. Including results from the first heat, only .79 hundredths separated McGinty and fourth-place Gretta DeCoursey. With Kendra Bowen taking fifth, the Boilermakers had three of the top five finishers in the event. That trio of Boilermakers later teamed with Natalie Myers for a runner-up showing in the 800 free relay.
Nikola Aćin (50 free) and Trent Pellini (100 breast) finished as the runner-up in their individual events Friday and were part of both of Purdue's top relay teams. They teamed with Michael Juengel and Ryan Hrosik to win the 200 medley relay (1:28.50) to begin the meet, eclipsing their season-best time as a quartet from last weekend at Indiana. Aćin and Hrosik finished 2-3 in the 50.
Ben Bramley finished top three in both springboard diving events Friday and competes on 10-meter, his premier event, Saturday. Maggie Merriman was third on 3-meter with a personal season-best score of 314.25. She'll also take to the tower on day 2 of the meet.
Nikola Bjelajac (50 free), Sylvia Kobylak (100 breast) and Skyler Younkin (200 fly) joined Riley has heat 1 winners.
Saturday's schedule feature nine events for each gender. Purdue's annual Senior Day ceremony is set for 11:30 a.m. ET and the meet will begin at noon.
