WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue women's team started the 2020 campaign with a resounding 6-1 win at the Schwartz Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon against Xavier.
The Boilermakers took the opening doubles point of the year. Nathalia Wolf Gasparin and Zala Dovnik claimed the opening salvo for Purdue at No. 3 with a 6-3 win over Kaitlin Ruether and Anna Letto, before Ena Babic and Csilla Fodor clinched the first point of the campaign with a 6-3 victory against Rachael Reichenbach and Anna Roggenburk at No. 2.
Nikol Dobrilova and Seira Shimizu held a 5-4 advantage at No. 1 when Purdue claimed the doubles point.
Purdue carried the early success into singles play, winning four contests in three sets. After the Muskateers (0-1) tied the match at 1-1, the Boilermakers took over. Babic rallied from a set down to beat Ahmier Kyle 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. At No. 2 Dobrilova needed a third set to oust Roggenburk 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 and put the Boilermakers within one point of winning.
Fodor sealed the match for Purdue at No. 6 with a gritty 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory against Letto.
Gasparin added to the tally at No. 5 with her 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 defeat of Ruether, before Sabe closed the proceedings with a 7-6(6), 7-5 win over Thomas at No. 4.
