WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team suffered a 41-0 loss at the hands of top-ranked Iowa on Sunday at Holloway Gymnasium, taking their first shutout loss since 2012, and moving to 8-2 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten Conference duals. The Hawkeyes scored bonus points in five of the 10 bouts, including pins at 165 and 285 pounds.
The closest the Boilermakers got Sunday was at 157 pounds, where No. 8 Kendall Coleman came up just short in a 4-3 loss to fourth-ranked Kaleb Young. Both Coleman and Young scored takedowns in the match, but the Hawkeye had two escape points to Coleman's one to account for the final difference.
Fourth-ranked Purdue senior Dylan Lydy's undefeated streak came to an end at 174 pounds this season as he fell to No. 3 Michael Kemerer 8-4. Kemerer's takedowns were the first of the year for a Division I opponent against Lydy who was 21-0 coming into the match.
Purdue junior Max Lyon also wrestled a close match at 184 pounds, falling 5-2 to Iowa freshman Abe Assad. Lyon got to Assad's legs a few times, but was unable to finish the takedown. A similar fate befell Purdue senior Christian Brunner at 197 pounds, getting in on fourth-ranked Jacob Warner a few times in the first two periods, but not scoring points. Brunner trailed just 1-0 going to the third period, but Warner caught a wrist and tilted Brunner for a four-point nearfall to break the match open and go on to win 8-2.
The Boilermakers aim to bounce back Monday, Jan. 20 on the road, heading to archrival Indiana for a 7 p.m. ET dual in Bloomington. Purdue has won nine straight over the Hoosiers, dating to 2011, and aim to extend the streak.
