The Purdue wrestling team saw a pair of champions crowned at the 57th-Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships as seniors Dylan Lydy and Christian Brunner won the 174- and 197-pound titles at the Sears Centre on Monday. The senior duo were two of three Boilermakers' to place, joining 157-pound, fourth-place finisher Kendall Coleman as Purdue scored 75.0 points and finished eighth in the team standings.

The top-10 team performance came despite three starters missing from the Purdue lineup and is the Boilermakers' fifth since 2007 and second in the last three seasons. The 75 team points is their third-highest total on record.

Lydy advanced to the finals with a 3-1 decision over No. 4 seed Ben Harvey of Army, going to sudden victory for the fifth time this season and emerging victorious. The win avenged last year's opening-round loss at the NCAA Championships to Harvey and was the 99th of Lydy's Boilermaker career.

Lydy hit the century mark with his championship victory over Northern Iowa's Bryce Steiert, defeating the Panther 3-2 for his 100th win as a Boilermaker. In a rematch from the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Championship, Lydy finished this one in regulation, picking up the takedown in the third period and holding his opponent off down the stretch.

Brunner got to the championship match with a 4-3 upset victory over No. 2 seed and third-ranked Patrick Brucki of Princeton, avenging a loss from the 2018 NCAA Championships. The Boilermaker senior scored a takedown with 45 seconds left in the match and then rode his opponent out for the win.

Brunner went on to post his second straight victory over fifth-seeded Jay Aiello of Virginia in the finals, beating the Cavalier at the CKLV Invitational, and backing it up with a 6-3 win Monday. After giving up the first takedown, he scored in the second and again in the third, riding Aiello tough and tacking on a riding-time point as well.

Lydy and Brunner become Purdue's third- and fourth-ever Midlands Champions and the second and third in the last five seasons. Chad Welch last captured a Midlands title at 165 pounds in 2015, and the Boilermakers' only other champion at Midlands was Dave Gibson in 1963.

Coleman came up short in his bid for a championship appearance, falling in sudden victory to No. 2 seed Kaleb Young of Iowa. The Boilermaker rookie struck early and held a 3-2 lead in the third period, but Young scored a late takedown and came out on top of a scramble in the extra session to earn a fall. Coleman bounced back with a 7-5 decision over No. 8 seed Logan Parks of Central Michigan in the consolation semifinals, but went on to fall to top-seeded Quincy Monday of Princeton in the third-place match.

Sophomore Parker Filius and freshman Thomas Penola fell just shy of the podium, losing in the Round of 12 at 141 and 285 pounds, respectively. Filius dropped a 9-1 major decision to No. 11 seed Salvatore Profaci, while Penola fell to Army's Bobby Heald 5-2.

The Boilermakers are off until Jan. 10, opening Big Ten duals at Northwestern for an 8 p.m. ET start at Welsh Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois. Purdue is 7-1 in dual competition so far this season and ranked No. 20 in the nation in the NWCA Coaches Dual Rankings, while the Wildcats hold the No. 13 spot.
